Low Standards/Poor Technique
Unlike some Martial Arts gyms, Yom Chi always focuses on progression with proper technique. Mastering the basics is essential in this sport to prevent injury and eventually moving to more masterful techniques. When the focus is not on the students and proper guidance is not given, standards in a Dojo drop. We expect more from our students because we believe in their capabilities. Every achievement should be something that our students know they worked hard for and can be proud of. |

Lack of Attention to Detail
Often in group classes such as Tae Kwon Do, things are overlooked. Our students are our number one priority and we take great care to notice what’s going on within our classes. We consider each student a part of the family, which in turn helps us to notice where improvements can be made and when special attention is needed. |
No Variety
Although there are certain things that are standard within our Tae Kwon Do training, a lot of gyms tend to forget that their students are human and crave challenge and variety. We want our students to be focused and eager to see what comes rather than just going through the motions. Changing up our routines also ensures we are able to focus on different areas of enhancement to create a well-rounded student. |

Using Only One Form of Cueing
Each student is unique and deserves to be treated as such. Often students struggle in group situations not because they are unable to perform at the same level as the other students but rather because the information has not been presented to them in a way that brings out their best. We want our students to succeed and if we need to adjust in order to get the message across we will. |
Focussing on the Master not the Student
It’s easy to get caught up in the celebrity of an accomplished master. But it is important to remember that we are here for our students. Their growth and accomplishments take priority. Additionally, we never want to be the type of studio that encourages students to think what they’ve already done is enough. Although we always want our students to be proud of how far they have come, we want to encourage progression and growth. Our training reminds students they are always capable of exceeding their own expectations of themselves. |

It’s About Them
Countless times, as gyms grow, we have seen them shift their focus from the students to the business. When Mr. Bain started Yom Chi the most important thing to him was to be able to pass on his love for Tae Kwon Do and to provide a safe, supportive space for his students to master their mind, body and ego. |
Ego
A big part of Yom Chi’s belief system is that ego gets in the way. We take the time to help our students overcome their ego. Once ego is no longer a factor, the possibilities are endless. Our students learn to let go and be present in their practice allowing for the best possible results from their training. |

Paper Black Belts
Often Dojos will award their students with a belt advancement just because they don’t know what to do with them next. If a student in unable to master a certain skill and have been stuck on it for a while they will skip past it rather than putting in the time and working together to see how they can overcome the obstacle. We want our students to earn their belts. That means that we will invest the time and energy to make sure our students can proudly say, “I worked hard for this.” |
Board Breaking/False Confidence
Our students will always be guaranteed technically correct instruction. Breaking boards and performing advanced movements without adequate preparation and training can be dangerous and instills a false sense of confidence. The safety and proper training of our students will always come ahead of tricks. |

No Goal Setting
Goal setting is an important skill for anyone to have; in a sport like Tae Kwon Do, it is even more so. This is easy to forget and a step that is often missed with bigger Dojos. Our students need to know what they need to work on to get to where they want to be. Progress is a personal responsibility and with guidance and instruction from Mr. Bain and the Yom Chi team, students will learn exactly what it takes for them to achieve their goals. |
No Personal Connection
We have always believed that Yom Chi is more than just a twice a week class. We consider each and every student family. We love to get to know our students and be a part of their lives. Getting to know each and every one of our students inside and outside of the Dojang is very important to us whether that means celebrating a birthday or attending a dance recital, we want our students to know how much we care and to know that we support them in all aspects of their lives. |
